The news of a pregnancy should ideally be met with joy – but all too often there is justifiable fear. The African Union Summit this week, set to focus on the health of mothers and children, has a chance to transform this fear into hope.
Ten years into the Millennium Development Goals, we know what African leaders have always appreciated: when you invest in mothers, whole societies benefit, and when you care for children, you raise a new generation of leaders.

 


Statement from the international humanitarian community on the death of Mr. Ahmed Al-Shami, Deputy Governor of Hajjaa and representative of IDP Executive Unit

The Humanitarian community in Yemen is profoundly shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Ahmed Al Shami, Hajjaa Deputy Governor and representative of IDP Executive Unit, in a car accident. The Late Mr. Al Shami was actively involved in the humanitarian operations in Haradh and Al- Mazrek camps and was instrumental in overseeing the day to day operations as well as coordination with the humanitarian community assisting the IDPs. His commitment and compassion for the humanitarian cause will be sorely missed.
The United Nations system in Yemen and the humanitarian NGOs conveys heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Al-Shami and to the Government and people of Yemen for their loss.

 


One third of world’s donated blood supply from young people – UN health agency

More than one third of the life-saving blood donations worldwide are made by people under the age of 25, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) announced today on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day.

On 5 June (World Environment Day) 2007, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on all UN agencies, funds and programs to become climate neutral and 'go green'. Since then, all UN organizations have been working together to put in place systems and procedures to measure and reduce the environmental impacts of the UN family. “I would like to see our renovated Headquarters complex eventually become a globally acclaimed model of efficient use of energy and resources. Beyond New York, the initiative should include the other United Nations headquarters and offices around the globe.”

8 Goals for Africa music video to be screened across South Africa during World Cup

Helen Clark, the chair of the UN Development Group which brings together all UN agencies working in development, today launched 8 Goals for Africa, a campaign song by eight of Africa’s best known musicians, calling for commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goals - a set of eight internationally-agreed goals designed to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, and maternal and child deaths by 2015.
